BLACK PEARLS

In the olden days, black pearls were only worn by royals and nobles, earning them the nicknames of “Queen of Pearls”, and “Pearl of Queens”. Black pearls are rarely black. These pearls commonly have playful shimmers of green, gold, blue, lavender and pink on the surface.

Pearls are often believed to have healing powers. It is said that it can also calm your temperament and demeanor, and to see life’s obstacles with an optimistic point of view.

Pearls get their colour from the nacre of the oysters they grow in. Black pearls are formed in the black-lipped bivalve mollusk Pinctada Margaritifera. This mollusk has a thick, black inner shell. Pearls that are formed near to the inner shell are darker, while those formed further away are a lighter grey or silver.

Native Tahitian collected natural pearls from the black-lipped pearl mollusk for many generations prior to Spanish and English involvement. Some of these natural saltwater pearls can reach to the size of grapes.

Tahitian pearls are often referred to as black but have a remarkable ranges of colour. Tahitian pearl is some of the most sought-after, expensive pearls in the world. Beautiful Tahitian pearls are among the largest pearls in the world.

 

Geography Locations

Cultured black pearls these days are mainly from Chinese freshwater, Japanese and Chinese akoya cultured pearls, and South Sea. And Tahitian pearls these days do not come from Tahiti anymore but from French Polynesia. Tahiti is now the main trading post for atolls that produce Tahitian pearls. Other places that farm black pearls including the Cook Islands, the Micronesian Islands, and to some extent, Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines, but only those grown in French Polynesia may be called Tahitian pearls.

History

 

There are many myths and legends surrounding pearls as one of the oldest gem being used since pre-historic times.

According to Polynesian lore, the god Lano came down on a rainbow to a princess, carrying black pearls with him as gifts. The black pearls, with their beautiful iridescence, were imbuled with the colours of the rainbow.

In another Polynesian legend, the moon bathes the ocean with light to attract oysters. If the oysters come to the surface, the moon bestows heavenly dew upon them. Overtime, the dew drop is polished, and a black pearl is born.

Black pearls have always symbolised wealth and prosperity probably mainly black pearls are incredibly rare, (even though black pearls are now cultivated, yet are still rare), therefore owning one would only be affordable by the richest.

In many cultures, black pearls are often associated with everlasting love, and therefore an ideal gift to a loved one.
